目的は黒人の方がマスタードガスに耐性がある、という研究結果を立証するため。しかも黒人だけではなく、プエルトリコの兵士や、敵国日本への効果を調べるために日系人兵士も研究対象として人体実験に使っていた様子。
人種で選別されるというのもさることながら、テストに参加した兵士たちは「口外したら懲戒除隊で監獄へ」と脅されていたため、今まで公にならなかったらしい。
