知らなかったけど、カリフォルニア、ひいては全米の農産物を支えるサン・ホアキンバレー辺りの地下水はウラニウムに汚染されているらしい。
ロッキー山脈のウラニウムを雪解け水が運ぶのは昔からだけど、セントラルカリフォルニアの灌漑農業・近年の旱魃でその汚染比率が増し、危険レベルを超えている地下水が増えているんだそう。これは怖いな。
公共水道は流石に「飲んでも安全」レベルまで浄化するようだけど、この辺りは井戸をほってそれを飲水にしている農業従事者も多い。特にメキシコ移民などは英語がわからないので、警告が読めないんである…。
