リンゴ本。レビューアー曰く、"magical"ってそこまでいう？と思いつつ気になって色々サーチ掛けて発見したのがここ。
Ranch Overview
Recognized for its high biodiversity and abundant resources, this area provides a valuable opportunity to study the methods of resource conservation applied through sustainable management techniques. The ranch was donated to the College in 1993 by the late Al Smith. A Cal Poly graduate and founder of Orchard Supply Hardware, Al had specific goals, "...that Swanton Pacific Ranch be maintained as a working ranch and used exclusively for agriculture, recreational, educational purposes".
CalPoly - SLOが運営する農園。といっても1993年にここをレクリエーション、教育の場として運営してほしい、という志に基いて寄贈されたもの。その寄贈者は卒業生でもあるAl Smithという人。実はこの人、いつもお世話になってるベイエリア御用達ハードウェアストア、Orhcard Supply Hardwareの創業者。ほぉ。その意志に従ってオーガニックアップルのU-Pickが運営されている。
Certified annually by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and yielding five tons of apples per year, the ranch's 2-acre orchard produces a diverse array of apples for many uses. The 16 distinct varieties ripen progressively throughout the fall allowing for an extended picking season. Grade-school groups are encouraged to arrange visits to the U-Pick where children receive an overview of ecological processes in organic farming before they set out to collect apples.
ということでレクリエーション・教育双方を兼ねていってきましたよ。
場所は太平洋岸Hwy 1からSwanton Rd.に入っていて数マイル。ここあたりは自転車で何度も通ったことがあるけど、こんなのは知らなかったな。まあ常時開設じゃないんでやってなかったかもだけど。それにしても今日はサンタクルーズのアイアンマンイベントと重なってHwy 1は自転車部分で使用されてた。そういえば去年もIronman 70.3にぶつかったなぁｗ。
上のウェブサイトにはRed Gravensteinが載ってたんで期待して行ったんだけれど、残念ながら時期ではなかった様子。
今日ピック出来たのはこの6種類。
前列右から左→後列の順で、
- Lodi: ほとんど収穫されていてわずかながら残っていたもの。ベーキングに向くらしい。
- Royal Gala: 酸味と甘味のバランスが取れていて好み。
- Gingergold: 「サラダ向き」と説明にあるけど、とってもジューシーで何処かなしを思わせる味。個人的に一番気に入る。
- Sali Red Delicious: 濃い紫色が特徴。
- Red Delicious: まあこれはよくあるタイプ。
- Jonagold: ちと早かったかも。
他にもFuji, Pippinがあったけどまだ時期尚早なので収穫せず。12ポンド半ほど収穫して終了。
