豆といえば"bean"、マメ科といえば"legume"だけれど、"pulse"で食用の乾燥豆の収穫物を指すことを知る。ただしさやえんどうなどの緑系の豆はpulseには入らず、"vegetable"に分類されるらしい。さらに大豆・ピーナッツも一応乾燥豆だけれど、主たる利用方法が油の搾取用ということでこれも入らず。日本語だと一言「豆」だけれど英語だ特別があるのは興味深い。
