アメリカだと37週以前に生まれた赤ちゃんのことを"preterm/premature birth"と呼ぶらしい。
Preterm birth, also known as premature birth, is the birth of a baby at fewer than 37 weeks gestational age.[1]These babies are known as preemies or premmies.[1]
うちの次男、2,500gより小さく生まれたんで"preemie"ではなかったけど「低体重児」。昔はひっくるめて「未熟児」と呼ばれていたけれど、今はこの言葉は使わないらしい、不正確だしね。
未熟児（みじゅくじ）とは、早産などで出生時の体重が2500g未満の低出生体重児のことである。しかし、妊娠高血圧症候群による子宮内発育遅延の場合など、出生体重が小さくても在胎週数が長い場合、出生した児は｢未熟｣とはいえない。｢未熟｣というためには呼吸機能、哺乳能力、神経学的所見など児に備わった生命機能が、胎外での生活に十分適応できるかどうかを評価すべきだからである。 このため、現在は｢未熟児｣という用語は正式の医学用語としては用いられず、｢早産児｣｢低出生体重児｣などと区別してこれらの用語を組み合わせて用いる。
んで、「低出生体重児」を英語で何ていうんだろうと思ってWikipediaで日->英引きしたら、
Small for gestational age (SGA) newborns are those who are smaller in size than normal for the gestational age, most commonly defined as a weight below the 10th percentile for the gestational age.[1]
一応"SGA"という医学用語があるけれど、基本ただの"small"か。まあそうだよね、この辺非常にderogatoryになりやすいし。
