商用Bビザ、駐在員Eビザ、学生Fビザ、自分が使ったL/H-1Bビザ等、色んな種類があるのはもちろん知ってたけど、その名前が何なのかは今まで深く考えてこなかった。
というのも"immigrant"/"alien"の定義は何なんだろうと思って調べていてぶち当たったのがこれ(Immigration and Nationality Act)：
(3) The term "alien" means any person not a citizen or national of the United States.

(15) The term "immigrant" means every alien except an alien who is within one of the following classes of nonimmigrant aliens
ということで、"alien"は米国籍でない人、"immigrant"は、以下の項目の人を除外した米国籍でない人、という単純な定義なんだけど、その"immigrant"の除外項目の一覧のセクション名がそのままビザの名前になってる。たとえばBビザ：
(B) an alien (other than one coming for the purpose of study or of performing skilled or unskilled labor or as a representative of foreign press, radio, film, or other foreign information media coming to engage in such vocation) having a residence in a foreign country which he has no intention of abandoning and who is visiting the United States temporarily for business or temporarily for pleasure;
Hビザはその性格上すんごい細かい。まあそれにしてもセクション名がそのままビザ名称になってるのは面白い、というか理にかなっている。
