ニュースを聞いていて気になっていたのが、「罹患する」の表現。contractもcatchもどちらも正しい（だろう）はずなんだけれど、聞く限り殆どのケースが、"contract a virus." これはなぜなんだろう。

Wiktionaryによれば同義語。違いなし。でもなんで、と思ってググる。
一応それらしき説明があったけれど、一番ポピュラーな説明が、

catchは感染症に使われるけど、contractはそれに限らない、という解説だけど、うーん、それっておかしい気が。コメントにも反論あるし。で、一番それっぽいかなと思ったのが、
I would like to add a distinction that is perhaps not wholly semantic, but rather pragmatic - that contract has a stronger connotation than does catch, it sounds more like something serious.
これは今回のケースにしっくり来る。より「シリアス」なケースなので。
まあ真相はわからないけれど、自分レベルの英語話者が気にするほどの事はないという知見は得た。
