NBCのオリンピック放送、水泳などのメインイベントはもちろんなんだけれど、なぜかビーチバレーが結構頻繁に放映されている。なかでも女子ビーチバレーの選手が肩に張っているテーピングがとっても目立つ。これについての記事がForbesに：
The surge in interest followed viewers' first glimpse of American Kerri Walsh, who's been sporting a web of tape on her right shoulder during matches. Walsh, who had shoulder surgery last fall to repair a torn rotator cuff, probably wears the thin strips primarily to relieve pain. They also correct muscle and joint function and improve circulation by applying compression to the skin. The tape itself, which goes for $15 a roll, contains no medicinal properties.
このKinesioというテープ、張ることによって痛みの軽減、筋肉・関節の矯正、及び循環系の改善が期待できるのだそう。このオリンピックで一躍有名になって、この会社のウェブのヒット数がオリンピック前は週700〜800だったのに対し、今は54,000にもなっているそうである。ものすごい宣伝効果だ。
このテープは実は前からアスリート御用達で、Tiger Woods, Serena Williamsといったアスリート達、さらにはLance Armstrongは自書の"Every Second Counts"でも絶賛しているらしい。
一巻$15ほどだそうなんで、自分も左肩に使ってみようか思案中。
