昨夜ウトウトしながら聴いていたBBC World Service。Unixについて語ってるんだけど、5分聴いても全く意味がわからない。自分の英語力を疑いつつ聴き続けるとどうも宦官についての説明の様子。ん？🤔
Eunuchs and empires

宦官の複数形、"eunuchs"がUnixと発音が同じ。で、調べてみたら、
Etymology[edit]
A pun on Multics to sound like eunuchs, as Unix was considered to be an emasculated Multics (see multi- and uni-). Probably coined by Brian Kernighan in 1970.
おおおおお！なんとUnixはeunuchのダジャレから来てるのか😄 "Multics"を去勢して(multi -> uni)Unixと命名した、と。ちなみにカーニハン命名。
それに「去勢」の英語、いままで"spay/neuter"は知ってたけど、これは動物のみ使うらしい。人間・動物どちらにも使えるのが"castrate"/"sterilize"、主に馬に使うのが"geld"。色々あることを学んだ。
