今日の英語：Dengue fever

= デング熱。

プエルトリコ、デング熱で非常事態宣言したらしい。

デング熱蔓延はもちろん気にかかるけれど、ニュースで気になったのがデング熱の発音。明らかに「デング」ではなく「デンゲイ」。なんで？🤔

"Dengue fever" is pronounced as "den-gay" due to the anglicization of the original Spanish pronunciation. The term "dengue" originates from the Swahili phrase "ki denga pepo", which means "cramp-like seizure caused by an evil spirit." It was later adopted into Spanish as "dengue," pronounced somewhat similarly to "den-gay."

ChatGPTに聞いたら、もともとスワヒリ語で悪霊のせいで起こる痙攣のような発作、という意味らしい。これがスペイン語になり"dengue"、ただその発音が「デンゲイ」になり英語へ。

うーむよくわからないけど、とりあえずChatGPTなんで話半分で。とりあえず発音が「デンゲイ」なのは間違いない様子。

置き引き!?

夕方、誰かがうちに訪ねてくる。ピンポン押さないなーと思ってたら去っていった。なんだか良くわからないんでカメラ映像調べたら、なんとうちからビニール袋を持ってってるじゃないですか！でもなんだろうこれ。

ということで、もうちょっと遡って録画を調べると、何かのデリバリーの直後、通りかかった大型犬２匹連れの女性がそれを見ていたのか、一旦通り過ぎて直後に犬無しで戻ってきて犯行に及ぶ。な、な、なんじゃいそれ！すぐに外に出て追いかけたけど、影も形もなし。すごすご引き下がってこれはご近所ネットに暴露しかない！となる。

で、妻が帰ってきて何かデリバリー予定は？と聞いたら無いとのこと。え？じゃあ配達違い？しかも届いた袋をよーく見ると、ペット用品屋のビニール袋。しかもうちは普段使わないところの。

で、冷静になって考えると、もしやこれはたまたま誤配達の通知を受け取ったドッグオーナーが無言で引き取っていったと考えるのが自然な気がしてきた。ビデオに写っている仕草を考えても多分それで間違いないだろう。

危なくご近所ネットで大恥かくところであった。いやしかし、誤配達がそもそも悪い！

更に一晩おいて思うに、実は隣の家人なんじゃないかと。そう考えると隣は犬を飼ってるし（鳴き声するんで）、犬無しですぐに戻ってきたのもわかるし、直後追いかけたのに消えたのも全て腑に落ちる。隣が賃貸で家人がよく変わるんで、家人を知らなかった、というのも理由の一つ。

= ささいな、僅少な。

誰もが知ってる中華系激安サイト、TemuとかSheinとか。その激安の理由の一つが、関税の免税額以下になるように商品をパッケージして、無税でアメリカに送りつけるためなんだそう。

The online shopping site Temu has exploded in popularity in the past year and a half. And part of their promise is very low prices. But as Nick Fountain from our Planet Money podcast reports, part of how they offer those low prices is by using a loophole around import tariffs. It's called the de minimis loophole.

それを"de minimis loophole"と呼ぶらしい。しかも1つのパッケージを少額にするため、逆にパッケージの総数は増え上がり、関税書類に内容物記載の規則もないので、不法なものを紛れ込ませるケースもあるそう。うーむ。

Minimum Fire Safety Standards

1. Hazardous vegetation must not exceed 6 inches in height any time after the compliance deadline.

4. Parcels one acre or less shall be completely abated. Parcels over one acre up to five acres require 30 foot clearance around structures and perimeter property lines. Additional 30 foot cross fuel breaks may also be required.
5. Parcels larger than five acres require 30 foot clearance around structures and perimeter property lines in addition to 30-foot cross fuel breaks as needed to separate the remaining vegetation into sections no larger than five acres.
6. Keep property clear of accumulation of combustible debris, such as trash, wood, and dead vegetation. Stacked firewood and neatly piled yard waste is not considered to be combustible debris.
7. Keep vegetation cleared from under the eaves of houses.
8. Trim tree branches to at least 10 feet away from chimneys. Trim tree branches up from the ground to provide at least 6 feet of vertical clearance.
9. Clear leaves, pine needles and debris from roof and gutters.

こんな指導プログラムが発効になるらしい。まあ夏の火事を防ぐという点で趣旨には同意なんだけど、ドライブウェイや家の前の道路脇の雑草をメンテしないと罰金。その基準が雑草の高さ6インチ以内って、この時期一週間で伸びるよそんなの。

​Property Owners are required to maintain the minimum fire safety standards throughout their inspection window. Inspection deadlines indicate the start of the inspection window.  All areas of the County are required to maintain the standards until October 31st, every year.

Inspection deadlines:

March 1st = Campbell, Santa Clara, Milpitas and Undeveloped Parcels in San Jose (The deadline extended to April 1st due to weather conditions.)
April 1st = Unincorporated County areas
April 15th = West Valley (Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga)
April 30th = Cupertino, Los Altos Hills and Palo Alto
May 1st = Morgan Hill
May 15th = Gilroy

The City of San José works with the Santa Clara County Weed Abatement Program to protect and educate the community. The program is focused on vacant parcels in San José and seeks voluntary compliance.
