"Unicode.": The Universal Telegraphic Phrase-book.という本があり、それの最も古い版は1892年に出たらしいです。それによれば、
A code of cypher words for commercial, domestic, and familiar phrases in ordinary use in inland and foreign telegrams.
電報用の文章短縮用暗号コード一覧の様子。例文には"Jones dines with us this evening and remains the night"と言うのがあり、これにUnicodeを適用すると、"Jones Coctivus"になるらしい。これは文字コードのUnicodeよりよっぽど難しいかも（笑）。
