こっちのマネージャー、バンガロール生まれのバンガロール育ち。ということで親切にもバンガロールの遺跡ツアーに連れて行ってくれた。キャブを借りて3つほど遺跡をめぐる。と言ってもバンガロール中心から車で5時間以上かかるんで丸一日のデイトリップ。
はじめに立ち寄ったのがこれ、ジャイナ教(Jainism)のShravanabelagolaという寺院。
Shravanabelagola (Kannada:ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೊಳ Śravaṇa Beḷagoḷa) is a city located near Channarayapatna of Hassan districtin the Indian state of Karnataka and is 158 km from Bangalore, the capital of the state. The statue of GommateshvaraBahubali at Shravanabelagola is one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage destinations) in Jainism, one that reached a peak in architectural and sculptural activity under the patronage of Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad. Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died here in 298 BCE after he became a Jain monk and assumed an ascetic life style.[1]
なんか舌噛みそうな長さの名前だけれど、お寺は巨大な石の山の天辺。680段の急な階段の先。
ようやく登り終わると、ドドーンと巨像。
いやあっぱれｗ。ジャイナ教ってあんまり馴染みがないけれど、英語名は"Jain"。そういえば"Jain"というのはインド人の姓でよく見るんで関係有るのか聞いてみたら、やっぱりあるんだそう。なるほどね。
次はここ、
Halebidu (literally "old city") is located in Hassan District, Karnataka, India. Halebidu (which used to be called Dorasamudra or Dwarasamudra) was the regal capital of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century. It is home to some of the best examples ofHoysala architecture. Most notable are the ornate Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara temples. The city got the name "Halebidu" because it was ransacked two times during the invasion of Malik Kafur.

12世紀にインドのこの辺りを統治したホイサラ王朝の建築物。2つの寺院が一つのコンプレックスにくっついていて、シバ神とも一人誰かの神（失念）をモチーフに。と言っても側壁にはヒンズー教の叙事詩からの彫刻がこれでもかと言わんばかりに彫られている。
一つ一つの彫刻をガイドさんが解説してくれるんだけれど、基本的にヒンズー教の基礎がない＋コテコテのインド英語のため半分も理解できなかった。それでもやっぱり彫刻として素晴らしいので見入ってしまう。この際ラーマーヤナでも読んでみようかなという気にさせられる。
聞いてて残念だったのは、
結構盗難とか、このように破壊工作にあってるものがあること。これは後のイスラム侵入でことごとく破壊された名残り。首をはねるってシンボリックだよなぁ。
ハヌマーンがラマからリングを授かってる所。意味的に重要らしいけどバックグラウンド不明。

Belooru (IPA: [beːluːru] (Kannada: ಬೇಲೂರು ) is a Town Municipal Council and taluka in Hassan district in the state ofKarnataka, India. The town is renowned for its Chennakesava Temple, one of the finest examples of Hoysala workmanship.

Halebiduの遺跡とほとんど同じ。違いはここは寺院が1つだけなのと、ヴィシュヌ神がモチーフな所。建築様式や作られた時代は同様。
入り口には当時のホイサラ王朝のシンボル。
ただ、Halebiduが外側が売りなのに対し、ここは内部の諸々が素晴らしいんだそう。
ここの特徴の一つの支柱。彫刻が素晴らしい。以前は回転したそうだけど、重みでベアリングが潰れて今は普通の柱。
