According to one widely circulated account, Heinz competitor Del Monte switched over to using ketchup after the Reagan administration declared “ketchup” a vegetable for the purposes of school lunches. In this version of events, the spelling “catsup” did not appear on a list of approved vegetables. In fact, the proposed regulation in question did not mention ketchup specifically at all—it mentioned “pickle relish” as a possible vegetable, hence the condiment-related uproar—and, in any case, the proposal never came to pass.
デルモンテがcatsupからketchupに名称変更した理由として、レーガン政権時に学校昼食の野菜として"ketchup"を認可、という法案があったから、という説があるけれど、それらしき法案に"ketchup"という語は存在しなかったし、実際その法案が通ることはなかったんだそう。
まあ理由はどうであれ、大手のデルモンテが名称変更したらみんな右へ倣えするのは容易に想像がつく。
