前から何故ベイエリアには"hella"とか、固有のスラングがあるんだろうと思っていた。このポッドキャストを聴いてちょっと納得。
バークレー高校、ここにhyphy movement、
The term hyphy (/ˈhaɪfiː/ HY-fee) is Oakland slang meaning "hyperactive".[1] More specifically, it is an adjective describing the hip hop music[1][2] and the culture associated with the area.[3] The term was first coined by Oakland rapper Keak da Sneak.[1][3]
に基づいたスラングを作り続ける構造があるんだそう。実際毎年"Berkeley High School Slang Dictionary"という、この高校で使われるスラング辞書がリリースされている。
実際このポッドキャストの人もバークレー高校出身だけど、現代の生徒たちのスラングはわからないらしい。例えば、

しっかりUrban Dictionaryに載ってる所がなんとも。それにしても冒頭で2つのスラング関連映画を紹介してたけど、
後者は目立たない白人の中学生がやってる誰も聴いてないビデオブロクのエンディングの決り文句、"Gucci"。これは
A versatile slang term based on the luxury fashion brand meaning okay/good/great/awesome/fresh/etc. Originally used in the streets but now popularized by the masses. Sometimes abbreviated "gooch" if you're an expert in its use. To be all Gucci is a wonderful thing indeed.
これしか説明無いけど、ポッドキャストによれば都会の黒人専用スラングの様子*1。それを白人の子が使うのはどうなの？appropriationでは？という例で取り上げられたわけだけど、トレイラーを観てもそれほど惹かれなかったｗ。
それに比べて上の映画はトレイラーからして面白そう。
で、ポッドキャストに引き合いに出されたのは、この途中でボートをオークランドの街で売ろうとするんだけれど、その売り込みの会話がローカルスラングで溢れている、という例。聴いても全然わからなかったｗ。
これは観てみるかな。
